Whitworth University, in an effort to protect the health and safety of the community, has announced it will reschedule its May 2020 commencement ceremonies for Sunday, Oct. 11. The decision was based on the results of a survey sent to graduating students last month.

The university will still confer degrees this May to all undergraduate, graduate and continuing studies students who are eligible to graduate.

In a message to graduating seniors, Whitworth President Beck A. Taylor said commencement ceremonies will now coincide with the university’s Homecoming Weekend, which he felt was appropriate, given that it will be a homecoming for graduating seniors as well.

“The significance of commencement is the celebration of the culmination of hard work, hours spent dedicated to the vocations you are being called to, and the capstone, for many families, of the value and importance of a rigorous and faith-filled education,” Taylor said. “On behalf of everyone at Whitworth, we are thrilled to celebrate your extraordinary achievements at this extraordinary time. Your contributions to this world are needed now, more than ever, and we look forward to honoring you.”

Whitworth will have a full weekend of graduation events, starting on Oct. 9 and ending Oct. 11 with the commencement ceremony at the Spokane Arena. The event will be livestreamed for those who cannot attend. For more information and to see President Taylor's video message to the graduating class of 2020, please click here.
